Release of a new UNESCO report on the effects of school-based sexuality education

Release of a new UNESCO report on the effects of school-based sexuality education

Comprehensive sexuality education, known by different names across countries, is one of the most effective ways to equip young people with the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values they need to build respectful relationships, make informed decisions about their health and well-being, and protect their rights. Yet evidence on what learners actually gain from national programmes, and on the conditions that make them work, remains uneven across countries.

To help close this gap, UNESCO’s new report, Learning about healthy relationships: Effects of school-based sexuality education, looked at the outcomes in five settings: Armenia, the Buenos Aires Province in Argentina, Lao PDR, Lagos State in Nigeria and Namibia. Across these settings, learners who received comprehensive, rights-based sexuality education describe more positive relationships, greater self-confidence and a stronger sense of inclusion. The report also highlights the institutional and pedagogical conditions that enable or constrain these outcomes.

This webinar will mark the public release of the report. It will bring together government partners, UN agencies, civil society organisations, youth networks, researchers and donors to discuss what the evidence shows about effective national sexuality education programmes, and how the findings can inform policy and practice at country, regional and global levels.

Interpretation will be available in English, French and Spanish

Planning for healthy and thriving learners: Global launch – 20 November 2025

UNESCO is launching Planning for healthy and thriving learners – a coordinated programme of work to embed health and well-being into education sector planning.

Planning for healthy and thriving learners aims to translate high-level commitments into concrete action, placing learners’ health and well-being at the centre of education systems. It provides practical tools, builds capacity, and empowers education authorities to take the driving seat in mobilizing support and resources from other sectors.

Planning for healthy and thriving learners builds on UNESCO’s Strategy on Education for Health and Well-being and  the Making Every School a Health-Promoting School  initiative, and is advanced in collaboration with  the  Inter-Agency Group on School Health and Nutrition.

The Chair is one of the contributors to the strategic resources for planning and policy-making. The briefing note, a high-level advocacy tool for decision-makers, and the Handbook on integrating health and well-being into education sector planning, which provides step-by-step guidance for ministries of education and partners across the sector planning cycle, from analysis and policy formulation to implementation and monitoring.

The launch welcomes education stakeholders, planners and partners. It is organized by UNESCO, including its Headquarters, International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa (IICBA), and Regional offices in Dakar and Harare, in partnership with the African Union (AU) and the Inter-Agency Group on School Health and Nutrition. You can register for the global webinar (hybrid) – connecting Addis Ababa with participants worldwide to showcase tools and country experiences, on 20 November 2025, afternoon.  Interpretation will be available in English, French and Portuguese for all sessions, with Spanish added for the webinar.

UNESCO School Meals Coalition: Education and Nutrition: Learn to Eat Well

Global food insecurity is a growing risk that has been compounded by climate change, conflict and economic instability. Meanwhile, obesity rates have surged due to food production practices, the marketing of unhealthy dietary patterns, and sedentary lifestyles.

This report explores the intersection of education and nutrition in the context of Sustainable Development Goals. It advocates for a systemic, life-cycle approach to strengthen both sectors and highlights how investments in education contribute to improved nutrition and vice versa. It underscores the need for robust monitoring of school meal programmes. The report also warns of growing global food insecurity, rising obesity rates, and calls for coordinated efforts across sectors to create healthier, more sustainable food and education systems.
